There are two versions of the rod. The long rod is from an early radio. The two section rod is from a late radio.

Of seven radios examined, two of the detent mechanisms were bent. Both bent ones occured on early versions of the radio: #4 and #6.

Ignoring the front panel band indicators for the moment, when the tab is bent, the rod will rotate all the way around. The tab keeps it from going directly from band one to band six.
The front panel band indicators demand that the band switch dial only rotate through 300 degrees: six positions 120 degrees apart. If someone forces it, the dial cord will break.
One of the broken radios (#4) had it's front panel modified with a couple of tapped holes and a stop installed
so only the top three bands were accessable. I never did figure out what the pin jack (far right) was for. It had a capacitor soldered
to it if I recall.
